The 'Green Pygmy Goose' is a small green backed duck with a dark cap and heavily scalloped underparts. The male has a green neck, darker head and large white cheek patch on the face while the female has a whiter face and an eye stripe.

It inhabits permanent freshwaters that support floating vegetation such as waterlilies.
The waterplants provide the principal food items, mainly leaves, seeds and even flowerheads.
They form monogamous pairs and the males fight frequently to repulse rivals. Sustained
physical contact is more common than in any other Australian waterfowl.
The eggs are often laid high in a tree hollow, but the nest may be placed on the ground when
trees are absent.
Near Chambers Wildlife Rainforest Lodges the Green Pygmy-goose occurs most regularly at Tinaroo Dam. It is more numerous around Mareeba.
