How To Get To the Atherton Tablelands:
- The best advice, to fully explore the natural attractions of the
Waterfalls and Crater Lakes District, is to hire a car in Cairns and
drive up onto The Atherton Tableland.
- Alternatively you can travel to the
Tablelands with Whitecar Coaches, where Chamber's can do a complimentary pickup and delivery to
Yungaburra by
prearrangement.
Directions:
The
Tropical Tableland is accessible from the coast via four major highways, each
driving through World Heritage listed rainforests.

The
Palmerston Highway is
the first access to the Tableland as you travel north from Townsville. It
joins the Bruce Highway just north of Innisfail. This
highway takes you first to the township of Millaa
Millaa. It is an easy and
safe drive and offers expansive views of gently rolling hills and farmland.

The
Gillies Highway is
the second southern access route at Gordonvale, south of Cairns.
There are many
breathtaking views as you make your ascent up the 19 km of this range road.
Once
you reach the top of this highway you come to Lake Barrine
and further on, Yungaburra.

Kuranda
Range is
the third coastal access route located just north of Cairns, at Smithfield.
This
scenic drive affords majestic views of the coast just north of Cairns, with
ocean views. The drive will bring you to the rainforest village of Kuranda
and then on to Mareeba.

The
Rex Range road
is the most northern route accessed by turning west off the Bruce Highway
north of Port Douglas. This
scenic drive gives you good coastal views as you make your way up to the
communities of Julatten, Mt. Molloy and Mareeba.

The western access to the Atherton Tableland is via Charters Towers or Mt
Surprise, on through Mt Garnet and Ravenshoe, the Tableland's highest town.

Drive south of Cairns to Gordonvale, then travel up the Gillies
Highway onto the Atherton Tablelands.
Approx 69 kms and 1.25 hours drive from Cairns.
