Northern Silky Oak :
Cardwellia sublimis

The Northern Silky Oak is the only one of it's genus, and is
restricted to the tropical rainforest of north east Queensland.

Here it can be
one of the dominant trees, often standing well above the canopy.

From this
height the large, erect wooden hoof shaped fruits (above) can release their seeds into
the wind.

This follicle is quite hard, and after it has fallen on to the forest
floor, it may remain for some time, and this is where most people first notice
this species.

Although the trunk is not always straight, the tree has been one
of the most important trees of the Queensland timber industry.
