Dwarf Harpullia:
Harpullia
frutescens
-
As suggested by
the specific epithet (which apparently means 'becoming shrubby' in Latin,
Nicholson and Nicholson 1994), this is a small shrub.
-
It's leaves are compound
and they, and the leaflets, are alternate.
-
The plant's most distinctive feature
is the flattened out nature of the stem (winged rachis), and the leaves have
long drip tips.
-
This shrub produces small white and pink flowers followed by
orange or red fruit that split open to reveal two seeds in two compartments.
-
The
black seeds are mostly covered in orange aril.
-
It is usually found
in the Understorey of relatively undisturbed tropical rainforest in the wet
tropics of north-eastern Queensland.
